The Future of Sustainable Urban Development

The Silken Berlaymont Hotel, Brussels

Wednesday 16th March 2011

Within the European Union, buildings are currently responsible for 40% of all energy consumption and 36% of total CO2 emissions. The energy demands in our homes, workplaces and leisure facilities consume more energy than either transport or industry, and account for two thirds of energy used by EU buildings.

Improving the energy performance of buildings is a cost-effective way of tackling climate change, improving future energy security and meeting EU emissions targets.

This timely International Symposium analyzes the existing targets, standards and methodologies and seeks to initiate a new dialogue towards achieving greener buildings, more sustainable urban development, boosting economic growth and jobs and fostering better social inclusion and equality.
